Invigorated & rejuvenated in 2 ways…
One of the places that inspires me the most is the Yorkshire Dales. I was originally born in Ripon, North Yorkshire as my parents were posted to RAF Dishforth at the time of my birth. My Mother is a proud Yorkshire lassie and my Father a Geordie so we are ‘of the area’. At the age of 6 months my family was posted to the South West of England. I grew up in rural Wiltshire up to 15 years of age, then moved out to Hong Kong for about 3 years and, although I returned to the UK in 1987, I didn’t return to Yorkshire until the year 2000.
Although I left Yorkshire at 6 months old, Yorkshire never left me. I had a yearning to go back to Yorkshire and finally got round to it 10 years ago, getting to know my beautiful home county on an intensely personal level right up until the New Year 2010. Family trips to Yorkshire were predominantly to the Selby and York area and my childhood memories of the County I worshipped were of Power Stations and the Industrial areas. When I arrived back in the year 2000 I was tremendously lucky to meet my best friend and soul-mate Jaki. She became my guide to the area and opened my eyes to another level of Yorkshire beauty and grit.
I’ve been back up to the area on a camping trip recently with Jaki and that is why I feel Invigorated and Juvenated in 2 ways! When you love a place because it is in your soul it remains always a pleasurable experience to return, and, when that can happen with one of your strongest life connections it is also inspiring. I have returned to suburban Hampshire feeling like I can run and jump endlessly.
It’s time to seize each and every hour and make it creative and constructive… TIME TO GET BUSY, BUSY, BUSY!

Mosaic underway…

WIP - Mosaic Plant Pot - Dolphin
I’m really excited because I’ve finally found the time to restart my mosaic work! I have a pair of terracotta pots that I’m covering in broken tiles and I’m having the time of my life! It is such a nice thing to do. You get rid of any tension or even nerves with a bit of tile smashing!
A Note of caution: Tile smashing can be very dangerous with flying fragments and razor sharp edges to the broken tiles, so it must be approached with some safety in mind! Goggles and gloves are my absolute minimum for me. I’m sure the Health and Safety Executive could offer you some others to adhere too! Bless them! Anyway, I’ve addressed the safety issues, so job done.
I’ve decided to do a dolphin silhouette on either side of the plant pot with a dark border round the top and base. It’s looking smiley at the moment (i.e., I just stand and smile at it sometimes!) and I’m pleased with the colour choices I’ve made for them. The plant pots will be on available to buy soon! I also take orders for specific styles, colours and themes of plant pots to compliment your garden design.

‘Peacock Feathers’ by Di Winn – Glass Painting 8″ x 8″ June 2010
This is another abstract on the theme of Peacock feathers. Although the photo of the work doesn’t show it that well, all the glass paints used are shimmering paints, so when seen in real life you get a similar effect to that of a real peacock feather!

‘Dolphins in Shallow’ by Di Winn – Glass Painting 14″ x 12″ June 2010
I’ve loved the dolphin ever since I watched ‘Flipper’ as a child. So much, infact, that I have a tattoo of a dolphin jumping out of a sunflower on the small of my back (they are my two favourite things!). The only thing missing from the tattoo is a rainbow, then all 3 of my favourite things would be right there jumping out of the waist line of my trousers! In this painting I wanted to catch the light filtering through the water and reflecting on the sand at the bottom, whilst also shimmering across the dolphins too.

‘Ritz’ by Di Winn – Glass Painting – My first Private Commission!
So, if I’m honest, I was terrified when I received the initial e-mail for this private commission! The client had found my White Rose Craft Studio website, liked my work and wanted a quote for a glass-painting to go above his front door in his newly renovated victorian terraced house in Hampstead Heath, London.
Once I got going on it though it was a labour of love, so much so I decided to hand deliver the work so that I could meet my first client. What a joy! If you want to find out more why not read the write up I did on it at my website by clicking here

‘Cheetah’ by Di Winn
This painting was inspired by the BBC Big Cat Diary series featuring the short life of a cheetah club named “Toto”. I was so inspired by his short life I picked up my brushes to try to capture the swift elegance of these beautiful animals, whose very existence in our modern world is a tribute to the very real desire to survive in complete adversity.

‘Kingfisher’ by Di Winn
This is the first painting that I have done in over 20 years, and is dedicated to my Father, as he inspired me to notice nature from a very early age. Does it matter that his influence on me was more a side-effect of his need to shoot at nature at every available opportunity! Not the Kingfishers though, I hasten to add. His preference was for game and clay pigeons chiefly!!
